My Problem With The Holidays.

It's not really the holiday itself, any of them, that I have the real problem with.

The way they are put before us is what bothers me. Seriously.

Halloween. I have a hard time shelling out tons of money for costumes that my children will wear only once for say maybe a couple hours. At most. Not only do you get a cheaply made costume for the price, but you have to accessorize with additional items. Money money money. It's what it is all about. All that orange doesn't thrill me much either.

Thanksgiving. Where is it? I go to shop for Thanksgiving and there is nothing there. It is over-powered by Christmas stuff. Hardly a Thanksgiving themed item is to be found anywhere. I know, they are there, I have seen them, but the quantity is sparse.

Christmas. Where do I begin? The true meaning of Christmas is lost with me. Not only me, but everyone. It's all about the hustle and bustle. The buying of gifts, the over-spending on the latest cool gadgets, and not to mention the music....Yikes! I won't even go THERE!

I do my best for Christmas for my children's sake. They love it and what kid doesn't?

Did I fail to mention that before we can get the Halloween decorations off the display floor, there is nothing but Christmas 'stuff ' EVERYwhere? I guess because of the fact that it is almost literally thrown down our throats is what irritates me. I don't really mean to be a scrooge, really I don't.

So as always I will grit my teeth, smile, and go along with it all. Oh, and remember to tell my children why this holiday exists to begin with. The true meaning should never be forgotten!

Truth be told, I am a festive gal, HOWEVER, I do keep the holiday's meanings in mind.

for example:

Halloween... to me, it's about going to the pumpkin patch, it's about carving pumpkins, it's about seeing the little kids dressed up (even if they just have sheet and two holes cut in it)... it's about handing out little candy and making their night.

Thanksgiving... to me it's about being with family, it's about being thankful and sharing what we are thankful for. It's about cooking delicious food to share with others.

Christmas... with all the hustle and bustle I try to keep myself grounded in the real meaning of Christmas. Traditions keep it grounded, and attending Church to remember all of the true meanings also is so important.

I'm guilty of buying some pumpkin paraphanelia for my home, and yes you'll see me with a turkey knick knack in hand, I am also the one holding the handful of ornaments... but underneath it all, my values and the meanings of each are in my heart.

p.s. you WONT catch me knocking down and fighting another lady in Target day after Thanksgiving over a sale tho! :)

I totally see your point. The fact that Christmas stuff comes out in September kills me.

For me the holidays are for the kids (except for Thanksgiving which revolves around family).

I am a big Halloween fan...I just love the decorations and watching my kids have a blast.

In regards to Christmas, I am pretty good at keeping costs down. I learned many years ago that after the kids have opened 3 presents...everything else is a wash. So I get them a few meaningful things and lots of fun cheap things. My husband and I don't even exchange gifts. It doesn't bother me one bit. If there is something I want...we put it in the budget...

I have to agree with you on this one! We need to get back to focusing on the meaning of Christmas, and the other holidays for that matter.

We are lucky I guess... grandma makes the girls' costumes for halloween so we luck out there.

Thanksgiving will be weird this year... I'll probably be by myself.

Christmas. Christmas I made radical changes to a few years back. The girls each get 3 presents. Why? Because that's what baby Jesus got, and why do we celebrate Christmas? It's Jesus' birthday. It's really helped control costs and keep the focus on WHY we celebrate Christmas.

What is up with all these people putting "Halloween lights" around their houses now??? I've got Chevy Chases Halloween Vacation going on across the street from me.

Ooooh scary, lights.

I'm just sayin'

also, I have a feeling people are going to be enjoying the true meaning of Christmas more this year than in the past, due to the economy.

ya think?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way about the holidays!

I agree, Christmas is shoved into our faces. I don't like that. It's become too retail.

The love I have for the holidays is spending lots of time with my family. :o)

I think this is the perfect year to get back to basics...you know...since the economy crashed and all.

Amen, Sistah!! My thoughts exactly... I almost get a sick stomach around Mid October when I start seeing Christmas things out in the stores. When I was a little girl I remember my mom saying while shopping, "I can't believe we haven't even celebrated Thanksgiving yet, and they are starting to put out Christmas things!!"

Now they are practically stringing lights around the Christmas trees before the jack-o-lanterns surface. Geez Louise!!

Thanks for letting me get that out of my system... Whew!! :) ~Jill

You said Joe Jonas. You pedophile!

Kidding...I dig him, too. Actually, I dig Nick the most so that makes me an even bigger pedophile...I think she just turned 16. I am more than double his age. Sigh...

You're right. I am SO into the holidays, though. But I enjoy the food, the family, the friends, and as stupid as it sounds, I love the smell. Crisp air, pies baking, throw up from the spiked egg nog, you know.. the whole nine. =)
