One Thing Leads To Another

Chelsea lost a tooth last night. The dentist had told her just last week that if she didn't lose it by the first of the year, he would have to pull it. Crisis averted.

So keeping with tradition, she put it under her pillow. And I, staying true to my motherly duties, placed a dollar bill there after taking the tooth away. When everyone was up the questions began.

"Mom, is there really a tooth fairy?" Now this came from Alyssa, who is my nosey, more questionable child. So, I caved. I told the truth. "No, I put the money there, the tooth fairy is just a fantasy."

So then of course, the inevitable question arose. "Mom is there really a Santa Claus?"

Now keep in mind, my girls are almost 12 and almost 9. I can't keep it from them forever. My answer was plain and simple.

" I am the one who buys those gifts and I shop for them, and I put them under the tree. But you have to realize that there are kids younger than you that believe what you used to believe, so please don't ruin it for them."

Alyssa was very fine with that answer and agreed not to spill the beans to the younger kids. But then she said ......

" I am glad it's you that buys the presents, but I still wanna believe in Santa."

That is fine with me.

I agree with Alyssa!

I think Santa will always be in my life in some way or another.

I am dreading this discussion...but with Peter being 8 1/2, I am not sure I have a lot of time left!

I think you handled that beautifully!!! And I agree, i'm just fine with still believing. I can tell Essie (who's 10) knows he's not real, but just doesn't want to admit it.

I gave Lyric the "spirit of Santa" story when she asked. Her younger cousin was the one who spilled. Jazz is almost 10 and still believes. Do you think this is our last "Santa" christmas?!?

Don't you wish they could stay that innocent and believing forever?

What a sweet answer your daughter gave! And at least they heard the truth from their mom and not from a kid at school. I remember arguing with a classmate about whether Santa was real or not....ah memories ;o)

That is so sweet! I know kids who learned the truth and sort of blocked it out because they really wanted to still believe in Santa!

awww, it's bittersweet when they start to figure things out. I still want to believe in Santa too. And I do believe in the spirit of Santa that lives on in all parents with these traditions.

That's really sweet. Just the other day my oldest asked me if I was santa. I totally lied and said no. She said she was relieved. I think it's the last year...

Apparently, this sort of thing is going around. I just posted on the horror of my child not believing anymore. I. just. can't. handle. it.

Adorable...she is very wise, my friend.

I believe in Santa...when I learned the "truth" in 3rd grade, Mama told me, "If you don't believe in Santa, he won't believe in you--and there will be no need for toys on Christmas morning."

To this day I still believe. I do, I do, I do!

She got a dollar! Will you adopt me? :)

Last year, ours was 9. She started out by saying she didn't believe in Santa. In fact, I should blog about this. Because, on CHRISTMAS EVE she decided to throw out there that she actually did believe in Santa.

Come to find out, it was a plot to get more gifts. Mad, does not describe it.

Needless to say, her Wii will have NO MENTION OF THAT MAN IN A RED SUIT who is not real.

I like the way you handled it but I'm just not ready to come clean. My son has come right out and asked me if he is real but I just try to change the subject or distract him with a question like, "Do you think he is real?" I never knew how much I would hate this aspect of parenting but I really do. I could do w/out all the fibs.
