Assignment: Sleepwalking

MamaKat has handed out her assignments for the week, and from the list I am choosing to tell you a sleepwalking story.

I have never really walked in my sleep. That I know of. My daughter, however, has. It is freaky.

To be honest, I don't think she has had an 'episode' in a while, that I have noticed.

Several years ago, my oldest daughter, who is now 12, but was probably under the age of 9, really had us worried. I swear I thought she would unlock the door and go outside or something. Not long after she would go to sleep, she would get up, eyes wide open and come and stand at my bed. Just stand there. That's it. She would not respond to anything we said to her except to somewhat be listening and go back and lay down and go right back to sleep, having no recollection of her behaviour the next day.

There were times that she would come into our bedroom, stand beside the bed and then turn around and go back into the living room and sit in the chair and just look straight ahead. Finally, after a few seconds of telling her to go back to bed, she would get up and go. Creepy!

One particular night, she fell asleep in the living room and I heard her get up to go into her bedroom. She went to her bed, pulled down her underwear and sat on the bed. Like she needed to use the bathroom! I asked her if she needed to 'go' and she nodded her head, so I told her to go the bathroom. She did and then went back and laid down and went to sleep. The next day, she did not remember having done it. She thought it was hilarious.

After some research on the subject, I actually found that it is more common in boys. What causes a person to sleepwalk is some sort of chemical that we all have in our brain, but the person who walks in their sleep, actually has too much of that same chemical. Interesting.

Luckily, she seems to maybe have outgrown it because I have not witnessed any strange night time behaviour from her lately. The teen years are right around the corner though. Yikes!

I walked in my sleep once when I was young -- my dad was working nights and I was walking around in the living room -- My mom though someone broke in and like to hit me in the head with a bat. That was scary -- I never did it again. Except for one night when I got drunk -- LOL
I can't imagine I would of been all freaking out and took my kid to the hospital.Glad to hear she grew out of it.

My giveaway is up of Eden Fantasy.

You are not alone. Freaky stuff is right! My husband is a very active sleepwalker, and it scares the crap out of me. Let's just say he's had dreams where he's fighting, and who gets beat up? Who? Me. It hasn't been easy. I have a sleepwalker story on my blog as well...

Wow. That is so interesting. I had no idea how common it was. There are lots of stories out there. I am glad your daughter thought it was so hilarious : ). Aren't kids the best?

My son was a sleepwalker and it used to freak me out. A few times he would actually have his eyes open and talk, but still be asleep. That was really freaky.

Hopefully she has grown out of it so that she can't use it as an excuse for sneaking out of the house at night when she's a teenager.

I was a sleep walker when I was young. I would catch myself sometimes. I went down the hall and grab a towel. I use to always dress myself in my sleep. I was a talker. I still do that at times.

Girl, I feel you with this...

Because Libbey did this for the very first time last week. I was sitting here, tapping away on Elliott, when I saw her walk into the bathroom, pee, then walk into the laundry room and attempt to go into the garage. I asked, "Libbey--honey, what are you doing? Let's go back to bed!" She replied, "OK." Then walked into the sun room--the opposite direction from going upstairs to her bedroom.

So I got her and walked her up the stairs and realized that she was fully asleep...I didn't say much more, as I was afraid it would scare her. Once I got her in bed I kissed her and she said, with her eyes open, "I'm asleep."

SO FREAKY.
The next morning I was telling her about it and she STILL does not believe that this happened.

Seriously...it wigged me out, man. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again anytime soon!

My son Shane only did it once that I know of and it WAS creepy! It was shortly after he had gone to bed and he came into the living room where we were watching tv, and he attempted to go outside through the sliding glass door!! If we hadn't of been there he would have gone outside!!!! I tried talking to him and he just sort of looked through me and wouldn't respond at all. I put him in bed and the next day he swears I made the whole thing up!! Didn't remember any of it! Weird huh??

So....should we start an April fanclub??? :-)

Hi there. New here but just had to mment. I have one he of a litle sleep walker in this house. After some research we have determned she has Night Terrors. Crys, talks, walks...we tried everything to snap her out of it. Know what works? Placing that little girl in fron of any Disney cartoon? After a minute or 2 she "comes to" can answer questions again and then we can put her back to bed.
Sometimes reality really is stranger then fiction!

Creepy. I've never had any sleep walking encounters. My hubby will randomly say stuff in his sleep every so often and that usually creeps me out!

I'll have to check out her topics next time. Maybe it will spark my creativity and get me out of my funk!

My kids have never sleepwalked... but my oldest has had night terrors before. It's been a long time since she's had one, though. But when she had a night terror, she would just sit up in her bed and be crying. Sometimes she'd just be crying a little bit, other times it would be full out wailing!

I think it was at her 5 year check-up that I mentioned it to her pediatrician... the dr said eventually my girl would grow out of it (and I guess she has... she's 8 now and like I said, it's been a long time since she's had one) but the doc also said there was a study about night terrors. When a kid is having one, it's best to just let it ride out... no matter what we did, we never could get her to stop crying. But anyway, this study said to get the child to use the bathroom to stop the night terror! I have no idea how it works, but it does! After that dr visit, anytime she'd have one, we would just walk her to the potty, she would pee and then stop crying and go back to bed. And of course, she never remembered any of it in the morning!

It might sound a little like torture...but I think moms of all sleep walking kids should take pictures of it. One, because it'll be funny stuff to show them. Two, it'll be good proof to make them realize what is happening to them so that they can properly prepare for the years when they move out.
